The Australian Light Horseman Memorial Garden in Semakh

At the station, in collaboration with Australian entities and individuals, a unique memorial garden was established to honor each of the fallen soldiers from the Australian Light Horsemen. At the heart of the garden stands a statue of an Aboriginal soldier and his horse, kneeling at the grave of a fellow soldier. The soldier is depicted placing flowers in one hand and holding a Bible in the other. This statue was created by Australian artist Jennifer Marshall, based on the image of a Aboriginal soldier, whose grandson attended the unveiling ceremony. Each year, a memorial service is held in front of the garden to honor the Australian horsemen who lost their lives in the battle at the station. The Australian Embassy in Israel, along with the ambassador, military attachés, and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participate in the ceremony.

The inscription on the sign reads:

Aboriginal Involvement in WWI   Over 1,500 Aboriginal men enlisted for service in WWI, doubtless many more would have enlisted but for the racist policies that existed in some of the recruitment stations. These men served with great distinction in the 1st AIF (1st Australian Imperial Force) and particularly in the Light Horse Regiments. The 20th reinforcement contingent for the 11th Light Horse Regiment, were nearly all Aboriginal and became known as the 'Queensland Black Watch'. On returning home to Australia, sadly these men were not treated as equals and had no voting rights at that time, however, in the military they were treated as equals and received equal pay. On the battlefield, "THEY were one US".

106th anniversary of the Semakh Railway Station battle

The memorial ceremony and wreath-laying to commemorate the 106th anniversary of those who fell in the Battle of Semakh took place this morning, Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the historic Semakh Railway Station. The recent events unfolding in northern Israel and the sounds of war around the Kinneret region have only deepened our profound commitment to honor and remember the Australian soldiers who fought here on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, over a hundred years ago. We remain committed to defending the State of Israel while safeguarding the rich history of our land, honoring the memory and legacy of the brave soldiers who came from abroad to fight for its freedom.
